Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily; and the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his no dating rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan, her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
Sigh.
What a story. It Ends With Us isn’t necessarily my favorite book of Hoover’s, but it may be her most significant book to date and I can’t even tell you why. It’s a big ass spoiler and I’m not about to cross River Song.
This is a story you need to go into without any preconceived notions in order to get the full impact. Once you reach that certain moment in the book, it’ll become clear why. I so badly want to delve into details and discuss exactly why this was perfectly executed, but …
Seriously though, Lily is a character a great number of people can relate to on some level, including myself. Going on her journey through past and present isn’t easy at times, but it’s incredibly important. Lily shows us that you shouldn’t judge someone without walking in their shoes. Strength comes in many forms. It isn’t forged overnight, and everyone has their own path to go down in order to learn.
Hoover delivered what I crave from her books. It evoked an array of emotions that had me laughing, crying, cursing, and everything in between. My stomach dropped and my heart hurt on a number of occasions, but I enjoyed every bit of it.
So I think it’s obvious that I love It Ends With Us. It’s an insightful and powerful story that I hope will give some understanding and allow people to see things from a different perspective.
Also, the author’s note at the end of the book is a must read, but only after you’ve read the book. Just don’t skip it.
